Tie one on: Scarves add distinction to Maggie Wilson handbags

Many scarves. One neck. It’s a difficult sartorial task to incorporate a scarf collection into everyday ensembles. And if you’re tired of winter, scarves definitely head to the back of the closets.

Longtime Winnetka resident, bona fide scarf collector and most recently handbag designer Maggie Wilson had the same accessory conundrum.

“I just wanted to use my scarves,” she said. “I was frustrated because I had all these things that I wasn’t wearing.”

And one day she decided her collection needed more play than what was decidedly fashionable for most ladies.

“Women tied their scarves around the handles [of handbags], but I wanted to incorporate them into part of the bag,” she said.

She sought out an established handbag designer to create her vision. When her friends and strangers on the street started asking where to find that bag, Wilson got to work.

Her newest project to launch? Belts.

And much like her bags, Wilson demands fashionable function.

“My belt line is exciting,” she said. “The buckle comes off and changes the whole look. It makes the most of what I have.”
